Myra Mier began her ballet training in Havana, Cuba under the inspiration of Alicia Alonso. She was selected to study at the Ballet Nacional de Cuba until she moved with her family to the United States. She continued her training in New Orleans with Gayle Parmelee and in New York with Valentina Pereyeslavec and at the American Ballet Theater with Leon Danielian. She also danced with the Louisiana Ballet as a soloist. Mier completed a five year pedegory course of the Vaganova Teaching Method in New York with John Baker and Jurgen Schneider.
As the director of the Myra Mier School of Ballet since 1973, Mier has seen many of her students go on to be accepted on scholarship to the most prestigious professional schools such as the Kirov Ballet, School of American Ballet, Hartford Ballet, Austin Ballet and the Boston School of Ballet. In 1991, Mier was selected by the Times Picayune as one of the “Ten Who Made A Difference”, received the Applauso Award from the Spanish newspaper Aqui New Orleans and also appeared on “The Angela Show.” In 1993 she celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Jefferson Ballet, with the Jefferson Parish Council and the City of Kenner proclaiming May 14th as Myra Mier Day. In 1995, Mier founded JBT and became its artistic director. In 2003, she celebrated the 30th Anniversary of the Myra Mier School of Ballet, the official school of the JBT.
